# EUI-64 identifier (`eui64`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

64-bit Extended Unique Identifier of the IEEE: an OUI or a longer company identifier followed by an extension that the organization assigns. IEEE 802.15.4 networks such as Zigbee and Thread, FireWire and InfiniBand use it as a hardware address, and IPv6 can derive interface identifiers from it. It is written as eight pairs of hexadecimal digits separated by hyphens or colons; a MAC address (EUI-48) has six pairs and is described by mac_address. RFC 9542 reserves 00-00-5E-EF-10-00-00-00 to 00-00-5E-EF-10-00-00-FF for documentation.

## Detection

Regular expression (Python `re`):

```
^(?:[0-9A-Fa-f]{2}(?:-[0-9A-Fa-f]{2}){7}|[0-9A-Fa-f]{2}(?::[0-9A-Fa-f]{2}){7})$
```

## Examples

- `00-00-5E-EF-10-00-00-01` — Documentation value of RFC 9542
- `00:00:5e:ef:10:00:00:ff` — Documentation value of RFC 9542 with colons
- `00-00-5E-FF-FE-00-53-01` — EUI-48-derived documentation value of RFC 9542
- `00-00-5E-00-53-01` (invalid example) — Six octets: a MAC address (EUI-48)
- `00-00-5E-EF-10-00-00` (invalid example) — Seven octets
