# H3 cell index (`h3_cell`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

Index of a cell (hexagon or pentagon) of H3, the hierarchical hexagonal grid system developed at Uber. The 64-bit index holds the index mode (1 for a cell), the resolution from 0 to 15, one of 122 base cells and one digit from 0 to 6 for each finer resolution; unused digits are set to 7. The canonical text form is lowercase hexadecimal without padding or prefix, so a cell index has 15 characters, starts with 8, and its second character is the resolution. H3 directed edge and vertex indexes use other modes and are not covered.

- Personal data (PII): no
- Categories: Geographic identifiers (geo)

- Classification: identifier

## Detection

Regular expression (Python `re`):

```
^8[0-9a-f]{14}$
```

## Examples

- `85283473fffffff` — Resolution 5 cell used in the H3 API documentation
- `822d57fffffffff` — Resolution 2 cell from the H3 API documentation
- `0x85283473fffffff` (invalid example) — The canonical form has no prefix
- `85283473fffffff0` (invalid example) — Sixteen characters
