# Handle System identifier (handle) (`handle_id`)

Persistent identifier in the Handle System, written as <prefix>/<suffix>. The prefix names a naming authority and may have several levels separated by dots, such as 20.1000 or 20.500.11794. The suffix is the local name assigned by that authority. DOIs are handles with prefix 10. The regexp matches handles with a dotted prefix; older handles with a single numeric prefix such as 2381/12345 cannot be told apart from other slash-separated values by their form.
