# Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) coordinate (`mgrs`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

Position written in the Military Grid Reference System of NATO, which is based on UTM. It is a grid zone designator (a UTM zone number from 1 to 60 and a latitude band letter from C to X without I and O), a two-letter identifier of a 100 km square, and an even number of digits, up to ten, that give the easting and then the northing within the square: four digits locate a 1 km square, ten digits a 1 m square. Spaces between the parts are optional. The regexp does not cover the polar regions, which use the UPS form with bands A, B, Y and Z.

- Personal data (PII): no
- Categories: Geographic identifiers (geo)

- Languages: Common to most languages (common)

## Detection

Regular expression (Python `re`):

```
^(?:[1-9]|[1-5][0-9]|60)[C-HJ-NP-X] ?[A-HJ-NP-Z][A-HJ-NP-V](?: ?(?:\d ?\d|\d{2} ?\d{2}|\d{3} ?\d{3}|\d{4} ?\d{4}|\d{5} ?\d{5}))?$
```

## Examples

- `4Q FJ 1234 6789` — 10 m precision, example from the Wikipedia article
- `4QFJ12346789` — The same position without spaces
- `4QFJ` — 100 km square only
- `4Q FJ 123 6789` (invalid example) — Easting and northing of different lengths
- `61Q FJ 1234 6789` (invalid example) — There are only 60 zones
