Four-character identifier of a three-dimensional structure entry in the Protein Data Bank, the archive of protein and nucleic acid structures run by the wwPDB partners (RCSB PDB, PDBe, PDBj, BMRB). It is a digit followed by three letters or digits. The wwPDB has announced an extended 12-character form for future entries, such as pdb_00001abc, which this regexp does not cover.
