# Publisher Item Identifier (PII) (`publisher_item_identifier`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

Identifier of an article or chapter, used since 1996 by Elsevier, the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, IEEE and other publishers. It has 17 characters: S for a serial or B for a book, the ISSN or ISBN of the publication, for serials two more digits (often the year), a five-digit item number and a check character. In print it is often punctuated as Sxxxx-xxxx(yy)iiiii-d. Elsevier uses the PII as the item part of its DOIs.
