# SHA-256 hash (`sha256hash`)

Digest of the SHA-256 hash function (SHA-2 family, 256 bits), widely used for file checksums, content addressing and digital signatures. It is written as 64 hexadecimal digits. Other 256-bit digests (SHA3-256, Keccak-256, BLAKE2b-256, BLAKE3 and Streebog-256) have the same length, so the value alone does not tell them apart: use the field name or context.

- Parent datatype: `hash`
- Personal data (PII): no
- Categories: Cryptographic identifiers (cryptography), Software development (software)
- Countries: global
- Languages: Common to most languages (common)
- Classification: identifier
- Former IDs: `sha256`

## Detection

Regular expression (Python `re`):

```
^[0-9a-fA-F]{64}$
```

## Examples

- `e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b855` — SHA-256 hash of the empty string
- `ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad` — SHA-256 hash of the string 'abc'
- `e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b85` (invalid example) — one hex digit short (63 instead of 64)

## Mappings

- autotype: `sha256`
- fta: `HASH.SHA256_HEX`
- schema_org: `sha256`

## Metacrafter rules

3 rules: 1 match the field name, 2 match values.

- `sha256hash` (data, `basic/crypto.yaml`)
- `sha256hash_by_field` (field, `basic/crypto.yaml`)
- `sha256hashbyvalue` (data, `common/software.yaml`)
