# SMPTE timecode (`smpte_timecode`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

Position in a video or audio recording as hours, minutes, seconds and frames (HH:MM:SS:FF), as defined by the SMPTE 12M standard and used in editing, subtitles and broadcast logs. Drop-frame timecode, used with 29.97 frames per second, puts a semicolon before the frames, as in 01:00:03;18. The highest frame number depends on the frame rate, so the regexp accepts 00 to 59.

- Personal data (PII): no

## Detection

```
^(?:[01]\d|2[0-3]):[0-5]\d:[0-5]\d[:;][0-5]\d$
```

- `01:00:03;18` — Drop-frame timecode
- `00:59:56:12`
- `01:00:00` (invalid example) — Time of day without frames
- `25:00:00:00` (invalid example) — Hour out of range
