# Temperature (`temperature`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

A measured or set temperature, such as an air, water or body temperature reading. Datasets store it as a number in degrees Celsius, degrees Fahrenheit or kelvins, with the unit either in the value or in the column name or metadata. The regular expression recognizes only values that carry a unit symbol. Semantic MediaWiki has a Temperature datatype that accepts K, °C, °F and °R and stores values in kelvins.

- Parent datatype: `numeric`
- Personal data (PII): no
- Categories: All measurable values (percentage, amount and e.t.c) (values), Scientific (science), Environment (environment)
- Countries: global
- Languages: Common to most languages (common)

## Detection

Regular expression (Python `re`):

```
^[-+]?\d+(?:[.,]\d+)?(?:\s?(?:°\s?[CFR]|℃|℉)|\sK)$
```

## Examples

- `21.5 °C` — air temperature in degrees Celsius
- `36.6°C` — body temperature without a space before the unit
- `-40 °F` — negative temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
- `273.15 K` — water freezing point in kelvins
- `25K` (invalid example) — K without a space usually means thousands
- `°C` (invalid example) — unit without a number
