# GNIS Feature ID (`us_gnis_id`)

Numeric identifier of a named geographic feature in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the official gazetteer of the United States kept by the US Geological Survey for the US Board on Geographic Names. It identifies populated places, administrative areas, streams, summits, structures and other features of the United States and its territories, and since 2024 also of Antarctica. The Census Bureau publishes the same number zero-padded to eight digits, for example STATENS 01779778 for California. Data Commons stores it in the gnisId property.
