# US Medicare Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) (`us_hicn`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

Former Medicare number of a beneficiary in the United States: the nine-digit Social Security number of the wage earner on whose record the person is entitled, followed by a one- or two-character beneficiary identification code such as A for the wage earner. Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries had a differently built number. Medicare cards switched to the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (us_mbi) from 2018, but the HICN remains in older claims and administrative files.
