# Well-known text (WKT) geometry (`wkt`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

Geometry written in the well-known text (WKT) markup of the OGC Simple Features standard (ISO 19125), such as POINT (30 10) or POLYGON ((30 10, 40 40, 20 40, 10 20, 30 10)). PostGIS also writes extended WKT (EWKT), which starts with the spatial reference id, as in SRID=4326;POINT (30 10).

- Personal data (PII): no
- Categories: Geographic identifiers (geo)
- Countries: global
- Languages: Common to most languages (common)

## Detection

Regular expression (Python `re`):

```
^(?:SRID=\d+;)?(?:POINT|MULTIPOINT|LINESTRING|MULTILINESTRING|POLYGON|MULTIPOLYGON|GEOMETRYCOLLECTION|CIRCULARSTRING|COMPOUNDCURVE|CURVEPOLYGON|MULTICURVE|MULTISURFACE|POLYHEDRALSURFACE|TRIANGLE|TIN)(?: ?(?:Z|M|ZM))? ?(?:\(.*\)|EMPTY)$
```

## Examples

- `POINT (30 10)`
- `LINESTRING (30 10, 10 30, 40 40)`
- `POLYGON ((30 10, 40 40, 20 40, 10 20, 30 10))`
- `SRID=4326;POINT (30.5234 50.4501)` — extended WKT
- `{"type": "Point", "coordinates": [30, 10]}` (invalid example) — GeoJSON, not WKT
