# Air pollutant notation (`air_pollutant`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

Short notation of an air pollutant measured at air quality stations, as in the pollutant vocabulary of the European Environment Agency (EEA) for air quality reporting and in national air quality data, for example PM10, PM2.5, NO2, O3 or SO2. The regexp covers only the notations of the main pollutants, not full names or the hundreds of other substances of the vocabulary. CO and NO are also country and state codes, so judge a column by the share of values that match.

- Personal data (PII): no
- Categories: Environment (protected areas, biodiversity, water, weather, emissions, waste) (environment), Chemistry (chemistry)
- Countries: global
- Languages: Common to most languages (common)
- Classification: categorical

## Detection

Regular expression (Python `re`):

```
^(?:PM10|PM2\.5|PM1|NO2|NO|NO[Xx]|O3|SO2|CO|H2S|NH3|C6H6|Pb|BaP|BS)$
```

## Examples

- `PM2.5` — Particulate matter below 2.5 µm; EEA vocabulary code 6001
- `NO2` — Nitrogen dioxide; EEA vocabulary code 8
- `O3` — Ozone; EEA vocabulary code 7
- `Ozone` (invalid example) — Full name instead of the notation
