Number of an ordinary passport issued by the National Immigration Administration of the People's Republic of China: nine characters. E-passports used E and eight digits until that range ran out in 2017, then E, a letter other than I and O, and seven digits, starting with EA0000001. Older ordinary passports, and now border tourism passports, use G and eight digits. Diplomatic, service and Hong Kong and Macao documents are not covered.
