# FAO ASFIS 3-alpha species code (`fao_asfis_code`)

Three-letter code of a species item in the ASFIS List of Species for Fishery Statistics Purposes of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, such as COD for Atlantic cod. FAO assigns the letters at random and keeps them for the species item; fishery catch, landing and trade statistics use them. Without column context the code cannot be told from other three-letter codes.
