Code of an Italian region, province or metropolitan city from ISO 3166-2:IT, alone or with the country code. The 20 regions have two digits, such as IT-25 (Lombardia), IT-62 (Lazio) or IT-82 (Sicilia). The 106 provinces, metropolitan cities, free municipal consortia of Sicily and decentralised regional entities of Friuli Venezia Giulia have the two letters of their abbreviation (it_province_code), such as IT-MI or IT-RM; Valle d'Aosta has only its region code IT-23. ISO had not yet added the Sardinian provinces of 1 January 2026 (OT, OG, VS) in the version read for this record, and IT-SU still names Sud Sardegna; the regexp follows that list.
