Registration number (targa) of a car in Italy in the national format used since 28 February 1994: two letters, three digits and two letters, as in AB 012 AB, with no reference to the province. The letters I, O, Q and U are not used. The digits change first, then the letters from right to left; the H series began in May 2025, and the EE series was skipped. Since February 2013 trailers have plates of the same form starting with X; Y is reserved for local police vehicles and Z for square rear plates. Motorcycle plates (two letters and five digits), moped plates and the provincial plates issued before 1994 follow other rules and are not covered.
