# Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) code (`msc_code`)

> **Draft.** Draft records have not been reviewed yet and may be incomplete or wrong; do not treat them as authoritative for legal or compliance decisions.

Class code of the Mathematics Subject Classification, produced by Mathematical Reviews (MathSciNet) and zbMATH Open and used by mathematics journals to classify articles. A code has two digits for the area, a letter for the second level and two digits for the third level, such as 81Q50 for quantum chaos. Codes that end in xx name a whole second-level class, such as 68Txx, and codes of the form 05-XX a whole area. The current edition is MSC2020. The regexp is the Wikidata format of property P3285; it does not accept a bare two-digit area.

- Personal data (PII): no

## Detection

Regular expression (Python `re`):

```
^\d{2}(?:-(?:XX|\d{2})|[A-Z](?:xx|\d{2}))$
```

## Examples

- `81Q50` — Quantum chaos
- `68Txx` — Artificial intelligence
- `81Q5` (invalid example) — The third level has two digits
