Census tract, a small and fairly permanent statistical subdivision of a US county, usually with 1,200 to 8,000 people. The tract number has a basic number of up to four digits and an optional two-digit suffix, for example 1457.02. Files store it as a 6-digit code with leading zeros and an implied decimal point (TRACTCE, 145702), unique within a county, or as an 11-digit GEOID with the state and county codes in front. Some ranges are reserved for water and special land use areas.
