Symbol of a plant taxon in the PLANTS Database of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. A species symbol joins the first two letters of the genus and of the specific epithet (PSME for Pseudotsuga menziesii), a genus symbol uses five letters (JUNCU for Juncus), and a number is appended when the letters are already taken (ALST11). The symbols are used in US vegetation surveys, soil and range data.
