Number of a monitoring location (a stream gage, well, spring, lake or other site) in the National Water Information System of the US Geological Survey. Stream stations get a number in downstream order, usually 8 digits (a two-digit part number and a six-digit order number) and longer in dense networks; wells, springs and other sites get 15 digits, the latitude (ddmmss) and longitude (dddmmss) first assigned to the site and a two-digit sequence number. The number is unique only together with the agency code (USGS for most sites) and loses its leading zero in spreadsheets.
