Bankleitzahl (BLZ), the eight-digit code of a bank or bank branch in Germany, introduced in 1970. The first three digits are the location number of the Bundesbank branch area (the first digit is the clearing area), the fourth is the banking group and the last four are chosen by the bank. The Deutsche Bundesbank publishes the directory of bank codes. Since SEPA it no longer appears alone in transfers but it is digits 5 to 12 of every German IBAN. It is often written in groups, as in 640 901 00.
