German tax number (Steuernummer)

Steuernummer (St.-Nr.), the number that a regional German tax office gives to taxable individuals and organisations. The regional form has 10 or 11 digits and is usually written with slashes; the form that is unique in all of Germany has 13 digits. It holds the tax office number, a district number, a serial number and a check digit. The tax identification number (Steuer-ID) and, for businesses, the W-IdNr. are replacing it.
