Unique identifier that DICOM medical imaging data uses for studies, series, image and other SOP instances, SOP classes, transfer syntaxes and other items. It has the numeric form of an ISO/IEC 8824 object identifier: an organization root followed by a suffix, both made of numbers separated by dots. A number has no leading zero unless it is the single digit 0, and the whole UID has at most 64 characters. The root 1.2.840.10008 is reserved for UIDs that the DICOM Standard defines itself. DICOM PS3.5, chapter 9, sets these rules. In a DICOM file a UID of odd length ends with a NUL padding byte, which the regexp does not accept.
