Stable identifier that the Ensembl genome database gives to a gene, transcript or protein of a vertebrate genome. It is ENS, a three-letter species code (none for human, MUS for mouse, RNO for rat, DAR for zebrafish), a feature letter (G for gene, T for transcript, P for protein) and eleven digits. A version suffix such as .8 may follow; it grows when the feature changes. Ensembl Genomes (plants, fungi, protists, bacteria) and some model organisms, such as fly and yeast, use other identifiers, which the regexp does not cover.
